  2. Hola

  3. If you cannot lose weight normally, there could be other reasons – did you have your thyroid checked, for example? Or are you allergic to something you’ve been eating?

The thing is, you could get liposuction and all the rest of it, but unless you figure out why you cannot keep the weight off, it’s just going to come back on again eventually.

  5. I used to work on a local NHS panel that decided whether people should be allowed breast reduction and weight loss surgery on the NHS so I hope I can help (I was a secretary writing down all the notes, so I’m not a doctor, but I did it for 2 years).

I think you have a good chance for various reasons. The correct way to ask for this is to go to your GP and ask that he write to your local PCT (primary care trust) to tell them that in his opinion you need this surgery.

You have a good case for the weight reduction because you have had medicine prescribed in the past. They will only approve surgery (stomach stapling etc) if you can prove that you have tried absolutely everything else. They will also only approve it if you can prove that you are suffering mental health problems because of your weight. Ask your GP to refer you to a psychiatrist who can assess this – this will need to be done because the Panel will ask to see evidence from a psychiatrist regarding your mental health.

Regarding your breast reduction, I have never seen a case where this was refused by my local NHS. They always approved it, and will do if it prevents you exercising, is making you feel reclusive and most importantly is giving you back problems.

The only thing I can see that might be a problem is your age – at 17 they might say that your body hasn’t stopped growing yet and that surgery would be ineffective until you are physically an adult.

Be aware though that both surgeries are very major operations and there is always a risk of death or disability afterwards. The breast reduction is a bigger deal than breast enlargement, it’s a shock to the body to have so much flesh cut away. The stomach stapling is permanent and irreversible. You will only be able to eat tiny teaspoons of food every day for the rest of your life. This could lead to being unable to ever have children, to major problems with your bones because you are not getting enough vitamins and other serious symptoms. So only do this if your life is really in danger by being overweight. Once done, you can never undo it.

On a personal note remember that it’s not your stomach that’s the problem, its the fact that you give it too much food. Food makes you happy while you are eating it but not afterwards when you look in the mirror, you need something else to make you happy. Hunger seems like a terrible feeling to have but it is only a feeling and will pass. The only way I’ve ever managed to lose weight is to eat half or quarter sized portions. If you do this your stomach will get smaller without an operation and you won’t have any side effects. You can do this and still eat your favorite foods but if you try to choose more healthy foods every meal you will have more success.

Hope some of this helps, all the best
